The A and the S have always stood for the same two people: Bill Attebury and Will Schroeder. In 1961, the two partners founded A & S Steel Buildings in Amarillo, Texas — backed by the original First National Bank of Amarillo and built on a foundation of hard work, honest dealing, and a belief that the Texas Panhandle deserved better commercial construction than it was getting.

Bill Attebury was no stranger to building things from the ground up. An Amarillo native and University of Oklahoma graduate, he had served as a Naval Lieutenant in the Korean War — earning the Naval Commendation Ribbon with Combat Distinguishing Device for electronic countermeasure missions carried out on North Korean soil. When he came home, he helped his family build Attebury Elevators, gaining firsthand experience in the physical and logistical demands of large-scale commercial construction. That experience planted the seed for what would become A & S.

By 2000, A & S had evolved well beyond its steel building roots. The company had built banks, hospitals, schools, churches, correctional facilities, restaurants, and retail centers across Texas, Oklahoma, and beyond. The name A&S Steel Buildings no longer told the full story. So the company rebranded as A & S General Contractors — a name that more accurately reflected the full-service commercial construction company it had become, while honoring the founders whose initials started it all.

Bill Attebury — the A in A & S — was one of Amarillo's most committed civic leaders. Over the course of his life, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Harrington Cancer Center, as an elected member of the Board of Hospital Managers for the City of Amarillo, and as a director of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch — one of the most recognized youth organizations in the Texas Panhandle. He and his wife Joyce were founding supporters of the William H. and Joyce Attebury Honors Program at West Texas A&M University, and established the Arnold Gentry & Vivian Dunn Attebury Memorial Scholarship in Education through the WTAMU Foundation. Their support for the ACE Scholarship program through the Amarillo Area Foundation helped fund educational opportunities for Amarillo-area students for years.

That commitment to Amarillo wasn't separate from the business — it was an extension of it. Bill believed that building a successful company and investing in the community that supported it were the same obligation, not two different ones.

A & S General Contractors is a proud member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, continuing a long tradition of participation in the local business community. We work with local subcontractors, suppliers, and partners throughout the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle — and we take seriously our responsibility to leave every community we build in better than we found it.
